In November 2008, under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, the Department of Pharmaceuticals initiated the “Jan Aushadhi Scheme.” The main intention is to make generic medicines available at affordable prices.

The scheme was revived as “Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Yojana” in 2015 to kickstart the supply of inexpensive generic medicines with efficacy and quality equal to branded drugs.

Again, it was renamed “Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana” to boost the ongoing scheme (PMBJP).

Jan Aushadhi Purpose

  • To produce high-quality medicines available at reasonable prices, particularly for the poor and the underprivileged.
  • The process is done by the “Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras” to reduce healthcare expenses and obtain all kinds of medicines at low prices for weaker sections of families.
  • The central government announced Rs 69000 crore for the health department in this budget.
  • At the same time, it was highlighted that should open Jan Aushadhi Kendra in every district of the nation by 2021.

Jan Aushadhi Kendra

Jan Aushadhi Kendras, part of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana, is operated by the Bureau of Pharma PSUs in India (BPPI). These are the centres where quality generic drugs are made open to all. Jan Aushadhi Kendras are in 726 districts of the country.

Role of Bureau of Pharma PSUs in India (BPPI) in Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Yojana

Bureau of Pharma Public Sector Undertakings of India, set up by the Department of Pharmaceuticals to assist CPSUs in coordinating distribution, promotion, supply, and procurement of generic medicines. Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras distribute these drugs to healthcare seekers.

Eligibility Criteria for Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Yojana

  • The Governments of the State acknowledge NGOs / Organizations / Cooperative Societies.
  • The location and money to open the centre are accessible to any non-governmental organisation/society/trust/institution/self-health community with experience in welfare activities for at least three years.
  • Or any pharmacist/medical practitioner unemployed and has a place and money to open a clinic.
  • It is essential to have a shop in a 120 sqft area to open a store.
  • The government will make more than 650 drugs available to those who open the centre.
PMBJP Design
  • Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJK) are set up all over the country through PMBJP to minimise health care out-of-pocket costs.
  • The Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India (BPPI) coordinates, procures, supplies, and markets generic medicines through PMBJK under the Department of Pharmaceuticals.
  • Compared to branded drugs’ retail prices, procured generic medicines are offered at 50 to 90 per cent lower costs.
  • All drugs procured under this scheme are checked at NABL (National Accreditation Board Laboratories) approved laboratories for quality assurance.
  • Drugs must comply with the WHO GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) benchmark.
  • To establish PMBJKs, government grants up to 2.5 lakhs to the applicants.
  • They are set up at any possible location or outside the hospital premises by physicians, pharmacists, entrepreneurs, self-help organisations, NGOs, voluntary societies, etc.
  • The Ministry of Railways approved Jan Aushadhi Kendras at railway stations and other railway establishments under the PMBJP.
  • It is an important step to access generic medicines at railway stations to increase the accessibility, affordability, and convenience of essential drugs for customers.

Documents Required for Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Yojana

  • It will require an Aadhar card and a Pan card.
  • Aadhar card, Pan card, certificate, and a registration certificate are require to apply for the institute / NGO / Hospital / Charitable institution.
  • To open a Jan Aushadhi centre, you must have at least 120 square feet of basement. You can also take the rent if you want, but all the documents must be submit.
  • Competent Authority’s Sales License
  • It was in the name of the “Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra” drug license.
  • Proof of a pharmacist with knowledge of computers (name of a pharmacist, registration with state council, etc. furnished)
  • You need to present the audit for at least the last three years to demonstrate that it was financially correct for you to run those stores. If you are the only applicant, you must show the bank statement for the last three years or the letter of sanction for the bank loan.
Jan Aushadhi Yojana Center Incentive Details

The government gives a 20 per cent margin on each drug’s MRP (excluding taxes) to the operating agency. It also offers financial assistance of up to 2.5 lakhs under the framework for those who will grant free space in government hospitals by the government:

  • The government will provide One lakh rupees for furniture and appliances reimbursement.
  • One lakh rupees were provide initially with free medicinal products.
  • 50 lakhs for machines, internet, printers, etc. as reimbursement

If free land in the government hospital premises is not provided

  • The government will give you Incentives up to Rs 1.5 lakh to JAs linked to the BPPI headquarters through online mode or by accessing the internet (using the software provided by the BPPI).
  • Based on 10 per cent month revenue will grant this opportunity, it will not be over ten thousand per month, and it will not grow from one and a half million.
  • The incentive rate will be 15 per cent in NE states and Naxalite affected areas, tribal regions.

  • Fill in the details like name, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, user ID, passport, and click on submit option.
  • Keep your username, user ID, and password in a secure location.

Apply Offline

  • Visit, first of all, the official Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Project official website janaushadhi.gov.in.
  • Choose the option Apply for PMBJK. A new page opens. Select apply offline.
  • For applying offline, you can choose the option “Apply offline.”
  • A new page opens with the application form.
  • Download the application form and take a print.
