History of Bhadrachalam Temple:

In the 17th century CE, a tribal woman named Pokala Dhammakka, residing in Bhadhrareddypalem, discovered Lord Rama’s deity in an anthill. She resolved the anthill with Godavari water.

Dhammakka constructed a hall (mandapam) with the help of villagers and offered prayers to the deities. During the rule of Abul Hasan Qutb Shah, Kancherla Gopanna assisted as the tehsildar of Bhadrachalam.

‘Ramadas’ was the title given toGopannaby the Kabirdas, a Muslim saint whose charity moved. Obeying Shah’s orders, Gopanna implemented the Jaziya tax, a penalty to force Hindus to adopt Islam.

Noticing the temple’s decayed state by collecting donations, Gopanna decided to build a temple for the deity. In the first attempt, he was harshly criticised by the local Hindus for implementing the tax.

Depressed by repels, Gopanna decided to use some of the tax collected to build the Bhadrachalam temple and confront the issues. Finally, the temple was made entirely of nearly 6 lakh varahas.

About Gopanna

Shah became furious after knowing the truth, and Gopanna was called to court. Gopanna explained that he did not intend to misuse the treasury.

He said he had sent a message about using the tax for temple construction. He didn’t receive any response, so he built the temple. And he thought of reimbursing the fee that he would receive in the future.

On hearing that, Shah ordered his soldiers to imprison Gopanna and hang him if he failed to repay the amount within twelve years, on the last day of the twelfth year.

Lord Rama and Lakshmana

Lord Rama and Lakshmana appeared in Shah’s dream and refunded the entire amount in Ramadas. Ramadas are gold coins with Rama’s lettering on them.

When the Shah woke up, he saw the gold coins in his palace and released Gopanna. He offered a lifetime pension for Gopanna and donated the area around Bhadhrachalam to the Bhadrachalam temple as a gift.

Some scholars ignore Rama’s idea of repaying the sum and say that the Shah had made an impartial and fair inquiry, found Gopanna innocent, and acquitted him with due honour.

After many years, two friends, Tumu Lakshmi Narasimha Dasu of Guntur and Varada Ramadasu of Kanchipuram, offered their prayers daily at Bhadrachalam and spent their lives over there. After Varada Ramadasu’s death, Narasimha Dasu took his corpse into the Godavari and drowned in the river.

Until the end of the Vishalandhra movement, the temple was a part of the Godavari district. Later, in 1956, the town was incorporated into the Khammam district.

During the Telangana Movement, Telangana and Andhra claimed that Bhadrachalam belonged to their respective areas. Finally, the Bhadrachalam temple became a part of the Bhadradri Kothagudem district of Telangana State.

Festivals:

Vaikuntha Ekadashi:

The celebrations of Vaikuntha Ekadashi are based on Srirangam traditions. As per the importance of Bhadradri in Brahma Purana, devotees seek Vaikuntha Rama’s blessings on the annual festival day.

Vasanthotsavam:

It is celebrated to commemorate the beginning of preparations for the Brahmotsavam festival. Vasanthotsavam coincides with the Holi festival and regards the development of mutyala talambralu.

Mutyala talambralu is a handmade mixture of natural pearls, rice grains, and turmeric powder. The deity of Rama is decorated using aromatic ingredients and nine blocks of Turmeric.

Brahmostvam:

It is a twelve-day-long festival celebrated between March and April. The marriage of Lord Rama and Sita is held on this day.

Vijayadashami:

The Ten-Day Dussehra festival is one of the important festivals celebrated in Bhadrachalam. During these ten days, the Ramayana is read in the ritual of yagna, which ends on the tenth day and is referred to as Vijayadashami.

  2. There should be an online services to book Nitya Kalyanam tickets, which will help common people if the seva is available on that particular day or not. We travelled all the way from Hyderabad for Darshnam and Nitya Kalyanam. Darshanam happened well and i was so satisfied and happy seeing with it, but was not able to sit/attend Nitya Kalyanam. Online services will help people coming from different places to know what seva is available so that they can plan and get darshan of Sri Rama Chandra Prabhu. Its purely my experience. Jai Sri Ram.
